as it relates to the legal element of ownership, abandon is the intentional surrender of rights of ownership of property.
abandon, as it might be used:
The property in question was originally the eastern half of a public highway, subsequently abandoned by the city.
An example of abandon:
Fiona buys a true-crime novel to read on her flight to Saskatchewan. Having finished the story in flight, she intentionally leaves the book behind when she exits the plane. At that point Fiona has abandoned her right of ownership to the book.
