abandonment, defined:

an intentional surrender of ownership rights over property.

abandonment, as it might be used:

The likelihood of voluntary abandonment is so distant and improbable that is should not be considered in the condemnation proceeding.

An example of abandonment:

Fiona buys a true-crime novel to read on her flight to Saskatchewan. Having finished the story in flight, she intentionally leaves the book behind when she exits the plane. At that point, Fiona has abandoned her right of ownership of the book.
