abscond, defined:

to leave, either secretly or quickly, as a means of avoiding the reach of a legal authority, which may relate to a pending arrest, lawsuit or service of process.

An example of abscond:

Fiona's wayward brother, Ralph, having written numerous worthless checks to merchants in Florida, absconded to Canada in an attempt to avoid legal responsibility.
