Disorders influenced by such factors as heredity, brain disorders, diet, stress, and family functioning that cause such symptoms as hyperactivity, aggression, withdrawal from social interactions, self-injurious behavior, immaturity, learning problems, excessive anxiety, or abnormal mood swings. Bipolar disorder A major affective disorder that is characterized by severe mood swings between major depression and mania. Sometimes the mood swings are dramatic and rapid, but most often they are gradual. Previously referred to as manic-depressive illness, bipolar disorder is often a chronic recurring condition.
