emancipation, defined:

the legal process of changing a minor's status. Emancipation ends a parent's or guardian's responsibility of support and grants the emancipated minor the right to his or her own earnings. The minor may be declared an adult thereby ending parental control.

emancipation, as it might be used:

The court denied the minor's petition for a declaration of emancipation based on his inability to manage his own financial affairs.
