mailbox rule

mailbox rule, defined:
a legal principle of contracts which specifies when an agreement takes effect. Historically, the mailbox rule applied exclusively to the mail. The mailbox rule finds that a contract becomes binding as soon written acceptance was mailed. The principle has been expanded to consider other forms of correspondence, such as email. Nevertheless, the principle remains the same: agreement becomes binding the moment acceptance is communicated by whatever method the party making the offer (offeror) designates.
