malum prohibitum

malum prohibitum, defined:
(from Latin. translates to prohibited evil) a classification for criminal acts which are not necessarily immoral in themselves, but prohibited by law nonetheless - driving a car faster than the speed limit allows for example. The classification, malum prohibitum is a designation of status of criminal acts. Compare malum prohibitum with malum in se which designates a classification for crimes which are fundamentally immoral such as murder.
