parol evidence rule

parol evidence rule, defined:
a rule that limits the use of oral testimony when deciding contract disputes. Under the parol evidence rule, oral testimony may be used only to clarify but not vary the terms of an agreement. Rooted in English common law, the parol evidence rule gives complete authority to the written contract over anything that might have been said during the process of negotiation. Essentially, it doesn't matter what was said if it wasn't put in writing.
