quantum meruit, defined:
the value of services provided. Originating in English common law, quantum meruit is often used as a quasi-contractual award. For instance, two parties form something that resembles a contractual relationship; although there is no actual contract. One of the parties provides a valuable service to the other party. A dispute over payment occurs. The court, not wanting to see one party unjustly enriched, may allow the damaged party a quantum meruit recovery for the fair value of the services provided.
