replevin, defined:

a legal action used to regain personal property unlawfully held by another. In simple terms, replevin is a means of going to court to get back what's yours.

replevin, as it might be used:

The church brought a replevin action against the art dealer for the return of artwork stolen a decade earlier.

An example of replevin:

Fiona's best friend Rachel is the granddaughter of two German nationals who were killed during the holocaust. Rachel's grandfather had been an art collector before his death. Years afterwards, paintings owned by Rachel's grandfather came up for sale in a major auction house in the United States. Rachel filed a replevin action to secure the return of her grandfather's property.
